New Music Wednesday: "Sunrise," by Deryn and Dan Cullen

This piece of music is absolutely stunning, and it will be really exciting to hear where it ends up. Deryn and Dan Cullen work together to create some of the most epic cinematic music I've heard, and their partnership is perfection. Listen to "Sunrise" and see what they have to say about their music:

"Dan and I have been working as a musical partnership since 2006. We tried quite a variety of styles and methods of collaboration for the first 3 years, but since 2010 we have focused on a cinematic style, and have streamlined our process and refined our sound. We play very much to our strengths: Dan is from a prog rock background and has an incredible flair for creating bold, memorable themes in a large scale setting. I am a professional cellist with a great deal of improvisational experience and a real yen for finding new ways to showcase the expressive qualities of my instrument. We make extensive use of orchestral samples, but use the cello to double all of the string parts and add additional material, which really brings the overall sound to life.

As we earn our living from music, it would be dishonest of us to say that a good portion of our motivation doesn't lie in paying the bills. And the prospect of not being able to pay the bills is a fine motivator indeed! This means that we must keep up with trends and formats (in our case those of trailer and production music), and work within those constraints in order to create commercially viable music. The challenge is to be creative within the restrictions of our genre and always find ways to put our own personal stamp on what we do."
