New Music Wednesdays: "Union Square Station," by Dale Trumbore

Today's piece of music will resonate with you...literally. The dark rumbles in the piano's lower register seem to be directly connected with your heart beat, and the soaring soprano line sounds like a bird flying south for the winter. See what Dale Trumbore has to say about the piece:

"Union Square Station is part of a set of three songs called This thirst in the lungs, which sets three texts by contemporary poet Robin Myers. Each poem is rooted in embracing the simplicity of a single moment.

This cycle was written in summer 2011 specifically with soprano Gillian Hollis's soaring high range in mind. I was struck by the musical imagery of the poem and intrigued by the idea of portraying in music a longing for something not to happen. The music is fairly static, portraying both the constant low rumble (what Myers calls the "raw sound humming in my lungs") of a subway station, and a longing to stay in that moment, uninterrupted, waiting."
